In his first
presidential debate, challenger Mitt Romney dazzled voters with an inspiring
and hopeful performance. Down in the polls, for weeks pundits claimed the
election hinged on the debates. Could Romney pull himself out of the grave he
had dug? He could. He emerged triumphant and resurrected.

On debate
night 1, there was a transiting Mars-North Node conjunction that was conjunct
Romney’s natal Moon-Jupiter near his Descendant. This powerful configuration
expressed outwardly as a passionate appeal to the people to give him a chance
to fight for them, to allow him to enact policies he believes will transform
the country for the best.
Across the
chart, the transiting South Node-Moon were conjunct his progressed Sun-Mercury
near the Ascendant on the 12th house side. Normally this is a sign
of danger and a warning of self-undoing. We might expect him to put his foot in
his mouth – to say the exact wrong thing – but this was not the case. He exuded
the sincerity of a public servant desiring to improve the well-being of the
nation. He looked inspired; his heart (Moon) and mind (Mercury) aligned with
the Sun’s sense of destiny: for this he came.
Natally, the
North Node is near the Ascendant and the orb has closed by secondary progression.
Romney had just completed his ½ nodal return in May, a time when the journeying
South Node joined the natal North Node to compare notes. With the Ascendant
temporarily under the influence of the South Node, during the summer, repeated gaffes
hurt Romney’s standing. There was none of this in evidence on debate night 1.
Transiting Venus was at the North Bending of the progressed nodes, and he
emanated charm, kindness, and likeability. But transiting Venus was opposite
Neptune (at the South Bending of the natal nodes) and there were accusations
that he was deceptive; loose with the truth. He tried to be all things to all
people, and according to the polls, in this he succeeded. Previous hurtful
words were forgotten (progressed Mercury conjunct the transiting South Node)
and the euphoria of hope reigned (natal Jupiter conjunct the transiting North
Node), as Romney became a visionary for the people whom he would selflessly
serve in order to heal a wounded nation (natal Mars at the South Bending in
Pisces, conjunct transiting Chiron). No doubt, given Romney’s faith (left
mostly unexpressed up to now – transiting Neptune at the South Bending), much
prayer preceded debate night. Given his startling performance, his prayers were
answered, and he was nothing less than inspirational. Now this, this is the
power of the energy of the South Node and South Bending, well-used.
